STARS: From Street Art to Space Art

The exhibition STARS: From Street Art to Space Art—curated by Simona Capodimonti and organized by Stefano Aufieri and Palazzo Velli Expo (Alessandro D’Alessandro and Valeria Cirone)—runs from September 28 to October 5, 2019, at Palazzo Velli (Piazza San Egidio 10) in the heart of Rome’s Trastevere district. Here, renowned street artists—alongside others who typically work in indoor settings—exhibit works inspired by space-related themes.
The event is inspired by the 50th anniversary of the moon landing—an extraordinary feat that took place on July 20, 1969, and was witnessed by all of humanity through television broadcasts and images—which is being celebrated throughout 2019.
STARS aims to explore complex scientific themes through the direct language of street art, a genre beloved by a growing number of enthusiasts.
The exhibition chronicles the relationship between humanity and the universe, as well as our long-standing quest to understand the cosmos. It is well known that scientists and artists possess the ability to envision things and create "worlds" before others do; through this capacity, they make a positive contribution to human evolution.
The "STARS" in question are the luminaries of the street art world featured in the exhibition—key figures from the Roman scene alongside many others from across Italy—representing one of the most innovative and compelling sectors of contemporary art in recent decades.
An indoor exhibition featuring artists who generally prefer painting on walls offers a unique opportunity to admire their style before setting out to discover their outdoor works. The list of artists includes Beetroot, Cancelletto, DavidDiavù Vecchiato, Lucamaleonte, Omino71, Maupal, Moby Dick, Napal Naps, Neve, Mr. Klevra, Mauro Sgarbi, Solo, and Stefano Bolcato.
Each artist interpreted the concept of SPACE through their own creative lens—whether poetically, as a mental space, or—more frequently—with the ironic, biting tone typical of the urban art "underground," aiming to provoke reflection on environmental, social, and humanitarian issues. Street art has, in fact, already reached outer space; the artist Invader sent a small mosaic to the International Space Station in 2015. Thus, it takes only the time of a launch to transition from Street Art to Space Art—and who knows what other alien entities, beyond humans, might have encountered and admired this art in space.
Many artists were captivated by the theme and joined the group exhibition, showcasing the diverse range of styles, techniques, and personalities found in urban art:

From the world of writing and graffiti: Bol Pietro Maiozzi, Er Pinto, Marcy, Orghone, Mr Vela, Starz, Warios, and Yest. From the tattoo scene: Roberto Dramis (aka Enigmaregis).
Among the up-and-coming talents: Aurum, Afra17, Atyom, Glasswall, Lola Poleggi, Mike Bravo, Mister Fred, Sony, Voice, and Zome.
An interesting section is dedicated to artists who typically express themselves through poster and sticker art in spontaneous installations—such as Alessia Babrow, Pino Boresta, Aloha, Ex Voto, Kocore, Koi, k2m, Lus57, Stencilnoire, Mr. Molecola Blu, Qwerty, Stelleconfuse, Tracey M., Winstons Smith, Jah, Zeta, and Za To—offering a chance to admire their free and innovative creativity both in the exhibition space and on the streets. Paying tribute to the moon and space are the refined women depicted by Marco Rea, the miniatures by Justin Bradshaw, the Fiat 500 designs by Monica Casali, the photographs by Gaia Villani, the sculptures by Jacopo Mandich, Andrea Gandini, and Sandra Fiorentini, the 3D prints by Luciano Fabale, the aliens by Eros Renzetti and the boxer by Paolo Bielli, the textural compositions by Matteo Peretti, the papier-mâché works by Marta Cavicchioni, the inventions by Lorenzo Dispensa, the White Lunar installation and performance by Monica Pirone MK, the Tracce Lunari (Lunar Traces) artistic-theatrical show by artist Luca Valerio d’Amico and actor Daniele Parisi, and the imaginative creations of artist and fashion designer Ilian Rachov.
A rich calendar of parallel events accompanies the STARS exhibition, featuring space talks, space tours, space movie screenings, performances, live painting, and fashion shows.
