A Glimpse Within” – Painting and Photography Exhibition Project

November 29 – December 9

This exhibition stems from a desire to take a bold step—through paintings and photographs—featuring young people, men, and women living with physical and mental disabilities of varying severity; individuals who, despite their challenges, strive to find their own place in the world.

The exhibition holds added significance as it coincides with the 40th anniversary of Law 180—the "Basaglia Law"—which led to the abolition of psychiatric hospitals.

The "A Glimpse Within" photography project aims to explore, through an artistic lens, the emotional universe that connects "us" to "the other."

A photographer and a painter work in tandem on this project, employing distinct expressive mediums with the shared goal of stirring the viewer's emotions.

While photography offers a unique perspective—distinct from other forms of expression—the collaboration and symbiosis between the artists serve to reveal to the viewer the entire world hidden behind a simple glance.

".... Raising awareness that when one of these young people is doing well, many others benefit—families, the apartment building, the neighborhood. Society as a whole becomes healthier and better....." – Quote from Dario D'Ambrosi’s speech at the United Nations.

IL TEATRO PATOLOGICO (The Pathological Theatre)

Directed by its founder Dario D'Ambrosi—one of Italy's leading avant-garde artists—this initiative seeks to create a bridge between theatre and the world of mental illness, specifically for young people with severe psychiatric conditions. The project is a collaboration with "Tor Vergata" University and represents the world's first university course

in "THEATRE INTEGRATED WITH EMOTION."

On December 5th—marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities—Teatro Patologico

staged Euripides' Medea at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

PROJECT CONCEPTION

PAOLO LINETTI

Head of museum activities at the Diocesan Museum of Brescia, as well as a comic book

scriptwriter and colorist. He studied Oriental languages in Milan and has worked

as a translator from Japanese (focusing on artistic subject matter). His love for

manga and art in general led him to found and promote Studio Ebi,

gathering a group of female artists best suited to the specific projects

that arose over time.

GIUSEPPE FUSARI

Director of the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art in Brescia and Lecturer in Iconography and

Iconology at the Brescia campus of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart; he is also

responsible for all ecclesiastical museums in Lombardy.

An exhibition curator and author of significant studies on Brescian painting from the 16th

to the 18th century, he participates in major conferences and conducts lectures and seminars.

DARIO D'AMBROSI

An actor, director, and playwright whose works explore the inner lives of the mentally ill,

he has been one of the most compelling theatrical figures on the national and

international stage for over thirty years. He has long held a deep interest in theater and mental illness—to the point of voluntarily committing himself to the Paolo Pini Psychiatric Institute in Milan for three months to study the behavior of the patients. This experience gave rise to the concept of "Pathological Theater" (*Teatro Patologico*), a form of performance that explores states of mental illness by tapping into their vital, artistic, and creative aspects, with the aim of restoring "dignity to the madman."

An actor and one of the few Italian theater directors active on the international stage, D'Ambrosi gained widespread public recognition between 2008 and 2010 for his role in the television series Romanzo Criminale. In 2004, he appeared in Mel Gibson's film The Passion of the Christ as the sadistic flagellator.

THE ARTISTS

CINZIA BEVILACQUA

After her initial training at the Vincenzo Foppa Art High School in Brescia, she attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence under the guidance of Professor Goffredo Trovarelli.

Her training in Florence and subsequent in-depth exploration of traditional methods and diverse techniques led Cinzia Bevilacqua to favor oil painting, though she has also experimented with tempera and painting on glass. These latter experiments have resulted in works—including copies—that are highly appreciated by ecclesiastical patrons. A painter of intense poetic quality, she has distinguished herself in various exhibitions and won critical acclaim at numerous international awards; critics have highlighted her fresh narrative style, descriptive vibrancy, and—particularly in her portraits—an introspective sensitivity of fascinating depth. She has created numerous portraits of figures from the worlds of culture and entertainment. Some of her works are held in prestigious

collections. She was selected for the volume Brescia: Le Protagoniste by Enrico Bazzani,

produced under the patronage of the Senate of the Republic and the Chamber of Deputies.

Writers who have covered her work include: Vittorio Sgarbi, Roberto Armenia,

Giuseppe Fusari, Adriano Primo Baldi, Giovanna Galli, and Paolo, Zauli, Michele Fuoco, Luciano Spiazzi, Evaristo Bodini, Mauro Corradini, Fausto

Lorenzi, Enrico Bazzani. She has exhibited in Italy and abroad in solo and group shows

alongside artists such as: Reggiani, Dorazio, Luino, Del Pezzo, Ferroni, Luporini, Tonelli, Abbozzo,

Cappelli, and Annigoni.

ALESSANDRO MONTANARI

A Roman photographer born in 1981 with a deep passion for

portraiture, he trained at Officine Fotografiche in Rome, specializing in

psychological photography. A lover of black-and-white imagery, he applies his portraitist style

to Fine Art projects. Fascinated by observation and the way people

interact with the space around them, he views street photography as the

primary means of finding answers.

Opening date: November 29, 2018, at 7:00 PM

The exhibition will be opened by: Paolo Linetti (Director of the Oriental Collection at the Mazzocchi Museum), Adriano Primo Baldi (President of ADAC), and Dario D'Ambrosi (Creator and Director of Teatro Patologico).
